Company Profile

Two Business Engines Under One Roof

Universal Health Services (UHS) is one of the largest hospital operators in the United States, listed on the NYSE as Class B shares. Founded in 1979 by Alan B. Miller, the company now operates roughly 400 facilities across 39 states, Washington DC, Puerto Rico and the UK, with about 101,500 employees.

UHS's business model rests on two engines:

  • Acute Care (~56% of revenue) - traditional general hospitals: admissions, surgery, emergency care. This is the stable but moderate-margin 'legacy hospital' business.
  • Behavioral Health (~44% of revenue) - mental health and addiction treatment facilities. This is the secular growth segment, as demand for mental health treatment keeps rising globally, with generally higher margins than acute care.

Q2 2026: Solid Momentum

For Q2 2026 (reported 27-28 July), UHS posted revenue of $4.638 billion, up 8.3% year-over-year and ahead of consensus. Acute Care contributed $2.61 billion (+8.6%) while Behavioral Health contributed $2.03 billion (+7.9%). Diluted EPS came in at $5.98, up 12% year-over-year.

One nuance worth flagging: behavioral health growth is currently price and acuity-led, not volume-led - actual admissions grew just 0.5%. That is a trend long-term investors should watch closely.

New Strategic Move: Talkspace

In March 2026, UHS announced the acquisition of Talkspace for $835 million in cash ($5.25/share) - a virtual therapy platform with roughly 6,000 tele-clinicians. The deal is expected to close in Q3 2026. It marks UHS's shift from a pure bricks-and-beds model toward a hybrid (physical + virtual) model to address clinician shortages and broaden its payor reach.

Control Structure: The Miller Family

UHS operates under a dual-class share structure. The publicly traded Class B shares (ticker UHS) carry inferior voting rights, while the Miller family holds Class A/C super-voting shares that give it effective control of the company despite a relatively small economic stake. Current CEO Marc D. Miller, son of the founder, has led the company since January 2021.

Shariah Status

UHS is classified as NON_COMPLIANT (Shariah) in our database. This means the stock is not suitable for shariah-screened portfolios. Contributing factors include the company's debt structure and the conventional nature of US healthcare sector operations (insurance-linked, hospital financing) that do not meet shariah screening criteria.
