Labcorp Holdings (NYSE: LH) is one of two dominant independent clinical laboratory companies in the United States - the other being Quest Diagnostics (DGX). Together, these two companies control the vast majority of the US independent lab testing market. This is not an easy business to break into - it requires a network of patient service centers, sample logistics, and physician/hospital relationships built over decades.
LH's business model rests on two segments:
As US hospital systems face margin pressure, many are choosing to divest their outreach lab businesses (testing services for outpatients) to large players like LH. Labcorp is a natural buyer of these assets. Recent notable acquisitions include:
Management describes the M&A pipeline as "strong" - though increasingly selective, favoring higher-margin specialty deals over "chasing lower-margin hospital deals."
This is the most exciting part of the LH story right now. The company has launched a series of blood-based Alzheimer's tests (pTau-217, and most importantly - Elecsys pTau-181, which received FDA clearance for use in primary care settings, available nationwide starting February 2026). This means Alzheimer's diagnosis, previously gated to specialists with access to PET scans or lumbar punctures (expensive, invasive), can now be done via a standard blood draw at LH's extensive patient service center network.
Oncology, neurology, autoimmune, and women's health all posted double-digit growth in Q2 2026 - far outpacing routine testing, where prices continue to deflate. This is the mix shift driving margin expansion.
CEO Adam Schechter (also Chairman) - a former senior Merck executive, in the role since late 2019. He oversaw the 2023 Covance/Fortrea spin-off that reshaped LH into today's two-segment structure.
NON-SHARIAH COMPLIANT - LH is flagged as non-compliant in the mahersaham screening database, most likely due to conventional interest-bearing debt levels (~$5.5 billion debt vs ~$8.7 billion equity) and interest income/expense ratios exceeding shariah screening thresholds. This stock is not suitable for investors prioritizing a shariah-compliant portfolio.
