Before we get into the business story, one thing needs to be stated upfront and clearly: Northrop Grumman (NOC) is NOT Shariah-compliant. This isn't a financial-ratio issue (debt ratio, cash ratio) that could shift quarter to quarter — it's a failure on the core business-activity screen. Northrop Grumman manufactures defense and weapons systems (missiles, bombers, strategic military systems) for the US government and allies. This category of core business activity falls under the non-compliant business list automatically, regardless of how strong the financial fundamentals are. This report is prepared for educational purposes and industry understanding only — not an investment recommendation for Shariah-conscious investors.
Northrop Grumman is one of the largest US defense primes — a company that builds the most sensitive, strategic defense systems for the US government: stealth bombers, intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), satellites, and air/space mission systems. Q2 2026 (reported July 21, 2026) paints a picture of a company at a crossroads — one hand holding very good news, the other holding execution risk that deserves close attention.
The good news: Q2 revenue hit $10.9 billion (up 5% YoY, beating the $10.8 billion consensus), adjusted EPS of $7.68 crushed the $6.82 estimate by a wide margin (+12.6%), and the company raised full-year 2026 guidance — EPS now expected at $28.60-$29.10, sales at $43.75-$44.25 billion. Backlog hit a record $104.7-$105 billion, up 17% YoY, with a 1.84x book-to-bill ratio in Q2 — meaning for every $1 of revenue recognized, the company took in $1.84 of new orders. That signals very strong multi-year revenue visibility.
But there's friction too: two program charges — SiAW in the Defense Systems segment and GEM 63XL in the Space Systems segment — pushed net profitability down to ~10.5% in Q2, sparking a debate about earnings quality even as EPS beat estimates. The HALO/NASA Gateway contract is also being restructured (NASA pulling back from the original architecture), which means revenue from this contract will be stretched over a longer period.
| Segment | Estimated FY2026 Revenue | Operating Margin | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aeronautics Systems | Mid-$13B | ~9% (low-mid) | Largest segment, B-21 Raider driven, +13% YoY in Q2 |
| Mission Systems | High-$12B | ~14%+ (high) | Highest-margin segment in the company |
| Space Systems | ~$11B | ~11% | Recovering after an 8% YoY decline in 2025; hit by GEM 63XL charge |
| Defense Systems | Mid-to-high $8B | ~10% | Hit by SiAW charge this quarter |
