L3Harris Technologies (NYSE: LHX) is not just another "defense company" heading into the second half of 2026 — it is simultaneously reshaping its entire business portfolio. Within the past several months, three major moves have converged: (1) the divestiture of a majority stake in the legacy Aerojet Rocketdyne propulsion business, (2) a $1 billion convertible preferred equity investment from the Pentagon into a Missile Solutions unit that is set to become a standalone company, and (3) a new three-segment operating structure effective 2026. This is not simply a "defense company that sells missiles" story — it is a defense prime actively refocusing capital toward higher-margin areas while unlocking hidden value through a strategic spin-off.
| Segment | Focus | 2026 Revenue Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Space & Mission Systems (SMS) | Merger of the former Space/Airborne and Integrated Mission Solutions segments — space systems, sensors, mission avionics | ~$11.5B |
| Communications & Spectrum Dominance (CSD) | Merger of Communication Systems, WESCAM (electro-optical imaging systems), and Electronic Warfare (EW) | ~$8B |
| Missile Solutions (MSL) | New standalone segment — solid rocket motor production and missile systems | Not yet separately disclosed (newly stood up in 2026) |
L3Harris is one of the largest US defense prime contractors, formed by the 2019 merger of L3 Technologies and Harris Corporation. Core businesses span tactical communications systems, space and airborne sensors, electronic warfare systems, avionics, and — following the earlier acquisition of the former Aerojet Rocketdyne business — rocket motors and missile systems.
In January 2026, L3Harris announced the sale of a majority stake in its Space Propulsion & Power Systems business (legacy Aerojet Rocketdyne) to AE Industrial Partners at an $845 million enterprise value, with the deal expected to close in the second half of 2026. L3Harris will retain roughly a 40% stake, and the entity will revert to the "Rocketdyne" name. Importantly, the RS-25 rocket engine business — critical to NASA's SLS program — is excluded from the sale and stays in-house. This is a portfolio-pruning move — shedding a lower-margin legacy asset — not a sign of financial distress.
The US government, through the Pentagon, is making a $1 billion convertible preferred equity investment into L3Harris's Missile Solutions unit — a first-of-its-kind direct equity partnership between the US Department of Defense and a supplier. Missile Solutions will become a fully separate company, with an IPO planned for the second half of 2026, pending congressional approval. This reflects a US strategic priority on strengthening domestic solid rocket motor / missile production capacity — a bullish signal for the eventual value of that unit.
Christopher Kubasik has served as Chair and CEO of L3Harris since June 2021, having previously served as Vice Chairman, President and Chief Operating Officer following the 2019 L3-Harris merger.
Based on the business-activity screen from the Zoya reference dataset, L3Harris Technologies (LHX) is classified as NON-COMPLIANT with Shariah investment principles. This is because the company's core operations are in the manufacture of defense and weapons systems (missiles, weapons platforms, military equipment) — a business-activity category that fails the Shariah screen regardless of financial ratios (debt, cash, etc). Investment in LHX is not recommended for investors who prioritize Shariah compliance.
