If you have ever been on an IV drip in a US hospital, there is a good chance you used a Baxter product without realizing it. Baxter International (NYSE: BAX) is one of the most ubiquitous suppliers of basic hospital infrastructure in the world - IV (intravenous) fluids, infusion pump systems, injectable products (drug compounding), advanced surgery equipment, and patient monitoring / front line care systems. Nearly every major US hospital bed has a Baxter product somewhere in the room.
But Baxter's story over the past three years has been far from pretty. The company went through a major breakup - selling BioPharma Solutions (2023) and its entire Vantive Kidney Care segment to Carlyle in January 2025 for ~$3.8 billion cash. The dividend that was once a point of pride (dividend-aristocrat-type identity) was slashed a brutal 94% - from $0.17/quarter down to just $0.01/quarter, effective the January 2026 payment. To make matters worse, in February 2026 the company issued 2026 guidance well below Wall Street's expectations - the stock crashed 16% in a single day.
After all that drama, the first genuine sign of a turnaround has finally appeared. Andrew Hider, former CEO of ATS Corporation (an industrial automation company), was appointed Baxter's CEO effective September 2025 - an operations-focused industrialist, not a traditional pharma executive. On 30 July 2026, Baxter reported Q2 2026 results that crushed expectations (adjusted EPS $0.56 vs $0.37 expected) and raised full-year guidance. The stock jumped roughly 17% in a single day - from $24.77 to an intraday high near $29, before settling around $26.81.
