Company Profile: Constellation Energy (CEG) - From Nuclear Giant to AI Power Leader

Constellation Energy Corporation (NASDAQ: CEG) is no longer the “boring” utility name you associate with a plain electricity company. Over the past two to three years, CEG has transformed into one of the hottest AI power names on Wall Street. The story starts with it being the largest nuclear operator in the United States, and it has since evolved into a primary power supplier for tech giants like Microsoft and Meta as they build out AI data centers at massive scale.

The single biggest turning point is the roughly $26.6 billion Calpine acquisition, completed in 2026. The deal doubled CEG's generation fleet by adding Calpine's natural gas and geothermal assets, the largest gas generation fleet in the US. From a company that was almost entirely nuclear-dependent, CEG is now a diversified generation giant spanning nuclear, gas and geothermal.

Core Business Segments

  • Nuclear Generation - CEG remains the largest US nuclear fleet operator, forming the backbone of clean, reliable baseload power for the American grid.
  • Natural Gas & Geothermal (via Calpine) - Post-acquisition, CEG now owns the largest natural gas fleet in the US plus geothermal assets, making the generation portfolio far more flexible and able to absorb surging demand.
  • Competitive Retail Supply - Selling power directly to commercial and industrial customers in competitive markets.

AI Power Deals - The Heart of CEG's Growth Story

This is the part that gets investors excited: CEG has locked in several long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with major tech companies to supply dedicated power to their AI data centers.

  • Microsoft - Crane Clean Energy Center (formerly Three Mile Island Unit 1) - A 20-year PPA for 835 MW dedicated to Microsoft's AI data centers. The previously retired reactor is being restarted, targeted for 2027, backed by a $1 billion Department of Energy loan.
  • Meta - A 20-year, 1.1 GW nuclear PPA for Illinois AI data centers starting 2027.
  • CyrusOne - A 380 MW power supply agreement in Texas, part of combined Texas deals exceeding 1,100 MW using Calpine's gas fleet.
  • Nuclear Uprates - Plans to add roughly 1 GW of capacity through uprating existing reactors, with $3.9 billion of capex, part of over 5,650 MW of long-term clean energy agreements signed to date.

So what does this mean for you as an investor? CEG is no longer a slow-growth defensive utility story - it now behaves more like an AI infrastructure growth stock, with revenue locked in through long-term hyperscaler contracts. That means bigger potential upside, but also meaningfully higher risk than a traditional utility.

Shariah Compliance Status

Based on Zoya's screening, CEG's status is COMPLIANT. This means the stock can generally be considered by Shariah-conscious investors, subject to periodic review since this status can shift with the company's financial ratios (especially the debt ratio, which jumped sharply after the Calpine acquisition - an aspect worth watching closely in upcoming quarters).
