If you knew Xcel Energy as the classic 'boring utility that grinds out a few percent a year', that's the old story. The new story: Xcel is now positioned as one of the key beneficiaries of America's AI data-center power-demand supercycle. The company has expanded its capital plan to $60 billion for 2026-2030 — the largest in its history — with data centers expected to drive roughly 60% of Xcel's retail sales growth through 2030. Management raised its contracted data-center capacity target to 6 GW by 2027, up from a prior 3 GW goal.
This isn't a tech company — Xcel is a regulated electric and natural gas utility holding company, operating through several state-level subsidiaries:
Overall Xcel serves customers across 8 states: Minnesota, Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The core business splits into two segments: Electric Utility (generation & distribution — the larger segment, majority of revenue) and Natural Gas Utility (gas distribution for heating & industrial use — smaller but steadily growing).
Important to state clearly: Xcel Energy is ❌ NOT Shariah-compliant. As a large utility financing a $60 billion capital plan, Xcel's capital structure relies heavily on conventional interest-bearing debt (bonds, term loans, credit facilities) — this automatically fails Islamic finance screens that cap interest-bearing debt ratios. This report is provided for educational awareness for Shariah-conscious investors — it is not a buy recommendation, and not a Shariah-compliant alternative.
