PETRONAS Chemicals Group Berhad (PCHEM) is Malaysia's largest integrated petrochemical producer with a market capitalization of approximately RM48.16 billion. Listed on Bursa Malaysia since 2010, PCHEM operates under the umbrella of PETRONAS (Petroliam Nasional Berhad), which holds a 64% majority stake.
As a Shariah-compliant company certified by the Securities Commission Malaysia, PCHEM conducts business through four main segments producing over 50 petrochemical products for global markets.
| Segment | Key Products | Performance Status |
|---|---|---|
| Olefins & Derivatives (O&D) | Ethylene, propylene, polyethylene, LDPE, MEG | Heavy losses in FY2025 - Chinese overcapacity crushed margins |
| Fertilisers & Methanol (F&M) | Urea, ammonia, methanol | Strong performance - fertiliser demand remains healthy |
| Specialties | Specialty chemicals via Perstorp & PROMAN | Weak - construction & automotive slowdown |
| Others | Investment holding, port services | Minor |
The O&D segment is the largest revenue contributor but has become the primary source of losses due to Chinese production overcapacity that devastated price spreads. In contrast, the F&M segment remains profitable as fertiliser demand in India and Australia stays robust.
As a government-linked company (GLC), PCHEM is controlled by PETRONAS with support from major institutional investors including the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and Amanah Saham Bumiputera (ASB). Notably, EPF recently purchased 10 million shares in March 2026, signaling institutional confidence in PCHEM's recovery prospects.
The FY2025 crisis that saw a net loss of RM2.14 billion has prompted management to launch a comprehensive portfolio review. This action aims to rationalize assets and focus on profitable segments.
PCHEM is not just another petrochemical stock. As a PETRONAS subsidiary, it offers exposure to Malaysia's oil & gas industry without direct crude oil price volatility. PCHEM's strong financial position with RM11.1 billion net cash provides a buffer to weather weak cycles and fund business transformation.
However, GLC status also brings special considerations: can government-appointed management act quickly enough in the highly competitive and rapidly changing petrochemical environment? This is a critical question investors must answer.
