The TJX Companies (TJX) runs four banners most people browse in person without ever thinking of them as one business: Marmaxx (T.J. Maxx + Marshalls in the US), HomeGoods and Homesense, TJX Canada (Winners, HomeSense, Marshalls), and TJX International (T.K. Maxx across Europe and Australia, plus Homesense Europe). Put them together and you get roughly 5,200 stores worldwide, annual revenue over $60 billion, and the title of the largest off-price apparel and home-fashion retailer on the planet. It does not sound like an exciting growth story on the surface - discount clothing racks rarely do - but 2026 is turning out to be one of the more interesting years in TJX's history, for a reason most investors have not fully priced in yet.
| Segment | FY2026 Revenue | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Marmaxx (T.J. Maxx + Marshalls) | ~$34.1B (largest, implied) | Core US off-price banner, backbone of the business |
| HomeGoods / Homesense | $10.2B (+8%) | 963 stores, 18M sq ft - fastest-growing segment |
| TJX International | $7.99B | 835 stores: 673 T.K. Maxx Europe, 74 Homesense Europe, 88 T.K. Maxx Australia |
| TJX Canada | $5.6B | 589 stores: Winners, HomeSense, Marshalls |
What ties all four banners together is a single buying model that is unusual in retail: roughly 60% of TJX's merchandise is bought as excess inventory from other retailers and brands, meaning goods that are already sitting in warehouses, already imported, already paid for by someone else's overordering or a cancelled order. The remaining 40% is bought direct from manufacturers, closer to how a normal retailer sources goods. This opportunistic buying is what lets TJX offer name-brand clothing and home goods at 20-60% below department store prices - it is not a discount on quality, it is a discount that comes from buying what already exists rather than ordering what might sell.
Here is the part that makes TJX's 2026 different from a normal year. New tariffs have raised the cost and risk of importing fresh overseas inventory for traditional retailers - department stores and brands that place fresh orders months in advance are now stuck eating higher landed costs or passing them on to shoppers. TJX, by contrast, is mostly buying goods that were already imported before the tariff bite, or buying directly at prices that reflect the seller's urgency to move product rather than the seller's original cost-plus-tariff math. CEO Ernie Herrman described merchandise availability in Q1 FY2027 as "off the charts" - brands and importers who cannot sell profitably at full price in a tariff environment are liquidating inventory straight into TJX's buying channel. Analysts at UBS and Morgan Stanley have both flagged this as a genuine share-gain opportunity for TJX against traditional department stores like Macy's and Kohl's, who have no equivalent buying-model escape hatch.
ā SHARIAH COMPLIANT per Zoya screening data (zoya_us_stock_reference). TJX has no core involvement in prohibited activities such as alcohol, gambling, or conventional interest-based banking, and its financial ratios sit within standard Shariah screening thresholds - important context for Malaysian investors who need to screen US stocks before considering them.
