Company Profile: Sherwin-Williams (SHW)

Most investors file Sherwin-Williams (SHW) under 'housing stock' — rising when new-home construction booms, falling when it slows. That framing misses the real story. SHW is fundamentally a repaint and pro-contractor franchise — the bulk of demand comes from repainting and maintaining existing buildings, not new construction. That makes revenue meaningfully more recurring and less cyclical than the housing-proxy narrative suggests.

The business model runs through more than 4,853 company-owned Paint Stores across North America and the Caribbean, selling directly to professional painters and contractors. Pro customers prioritize product availability, quality, and service over the lowest price — which lets SHW hold premium pricing without losing loyal demand.

Three Business Segments

SegmentScopeCurrent Status
Paint Stores Group~4,853 NA/Caribbean stores — core profit engine, direct-to-proStrong, best margins
Consumer Brands Group307 LatAm stores + big-box retail (Lowe's, Home Depot) — DIY-facingSoft, consumers trading down
Performance Coatings Group317 branches worldwide — industrial, auto refinish, protective coatingsSteady, tied to industrial/auto cycles

Suvinil — a Latin America Expansion Play

In October 2025, SHW acquired Suvinil, a leading Brazilian architectural paints brand generating roughly $525M in annual sales. The deal broadens Consumer Brands Group's LatAm footprint and helped drive the Q1 2026 revenue beat — though it also added to the company's debt load (covered in the Financials section).

Leadership

CEO Heidi Petz is steering the company through a tougher cost backdrop than originally expected. She has been direct about it, noting the tariff and geopolitical environment created "a more dynamic cost backdrop than we originally anticipated." In response, SHW raised paint product prices by 9% and thinner/solvent prices by 18% to defend margins.

Shariah Status

COMPLIANT (per Zoya US stock reference). SHW operates in specialty chemicals (paints and coatings) — no exposure to non-compliant activities such as riba, alcohol, or gambling.

Financials: Sherwin-Williams (SHW)

SHW's financial story this quarter is steady sales growth, nearly unchanged margins, and much better cash flow. On the other side, the balance sheet continues to carry high debt because of large share buybacks. Both sides need to be read together.

Metric (Q2 2026)ValueYoY
Net sales$6,789.3M+7.5%
Gross margin49.2%49.4% a year ago
EBITDA$1,434.8M (21.1% of sales)+13.8%
Net income$843.6M (12.4% of sales)+11.8%
Diluted / adjusted EPS$3.43 / $3.70+14.3% / +9.5%

Gross margin of 49.2% slipped slightly from 49.4%, but with moderately higher raw material costs and the dilutive effect of Suvinil, management offset most of the pressure through pricing. EBITDA grew faster than sales (13.8% versus 7.5%), so operating leverage is working.

On cash flow, H1 operations generated $1,486.6 million versus $1,051.5 million a year earlier (+41%, our own calculation), and capex fell to $246.7 million from $370.8 million. H1 free cash flow was about $1.24 billion (our own calculation: operating cash flow less capex). Part of the improvement comes from lighter working capital and lower capex, not purely from higher profit.

Dividends: Sherwin-Williams (SHW)

SHW is a dividend growth story, not a dividend yield story. The quarterly dividend of $0.80 (raised 1.3% from $0.79 in February 2026) gives $3.20 a year, a yield of about 0.97% at $330.44. The latest raise is small, a sign management is cautious on dividend growth while prioritizing buybacks.

The annual-increase streak continues: the February 2026 raise was reported as following 47 consecutive years of increases (news reports count 48 years after that raise, depending on how it is counted), so it remains among the most consistent dividend payers in the US. The latest dividend was declared on July 22, 2026 at the same $0.80.
