Company Profile: Fiserv, Inc. (FISV)

What Is Fiserv?

Fiserv is one of America's largest fintech and payments giants - a company that processes payments for millions of small merchants and runs the behind-the-scenes 'core processing' systems for thousands of US banks and credit unions. If you've ever tapped a card at a small store on a Clover terminal, or your local bank runs on third-party back-end systems, chances are Fiserv is involved somewhere behind the scenes.

Ticker note: Fiserv used to trade on the NYSE under the code FI, but moved back to Nasdaq on 11 November 2025 under its original code, FISV. Same company, same shares - just relisted on a different exchange.

Two Core Business Segments

  • Merchant Solutions - the primary growth engine, led by the Clover platform (a POS/point-of-sale system for small-to-mid-size merchants). Clover's annualized GPV (gross payment volume) is now around $324 billion, growing +12% (excluding gateway migration effects). VAS (value-added services like capital loans, analytics, marketing) penetration is around 27% of Clover merchants, with VAS revenue up +18%.
  • Financial Solutions - the core-processing business for thousands of US banks and credit unions, plus the STAR and Accel debit networks, embedded finance solutions, and a bank-friendly stablecoin, FIUSD, launched in July 2026.

The 2025 Crisis Story: How a Giant Fell Over 70%

This isn't an ordinary stock story - it's a dramatic corporate collapse. Timeline summary:

  • July 2025 - guidance cut for the first time after Clover/merchant deceleration; stock fell ~20%.
  • 29 October 2025 - 'the crash'. Q3 organic growth collapsed from 8% to +1%, CEO Mike Lyons slashed FY2025 guidance a second time while disclosing 'financial surprises' and admitting a more rigorous review of prior management's numbers. The stock fell 44% in one day - its worst day ever - wiping out roughly $32 billion in market value.
  • 11 November 2025 - listing moved from the NYSE (FI) to Nasdaq (FISV).
  • January 2026 - board overhaul: Gordon Nixon (former RBC CEO) appointed independent chairman, joined by two new directors.
  • February 2026 - FY2026 guidance reset (organic +1-3%, EPS $8.00-$8.30); activist investor Jana Partners discloses a strategic stake.
  • June 2026 - CEO Mike Lyons resigns after only ~13 months (stock -71% during his tenure) to lead Truist Financial. Takis Georgakopoulos, ex-JPMorgan global head of payments, appointed CEO immediately.
  • July 2026 - reports emerge that Fiserv is in talks to sell its STAR and Accel debit networks to a bank consortium (JPMorgan, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, PNC).

CEO Turnover: Three Leaders in 18 Months

Frank Bisignano (former CEO, departed to join the Trump administration) was succeeded by Mike Lyons in May 2025, who himself resigned in June 2026 after just 13 months as the stock fell 71% during his tenure. Takis Georgakopoulos now leads the company - a JPMorgan payments veteran regarded as a credible heavyweight hire, but the rapid leadership churn remains a concern for some analysts.

Shariah Status: COMPLIANT

Shariah status (per our database): COMPLIANT. This is worth emphasizing - in a Financials sector where most names fail the Shariah screen (conventional banks, insurers, interest-based asset managers), Fiserv is one of the rare exceptions because its core business is payments processing and technology (fee-based), not interest-bearing lending. For investors prioritizing a Shariah-compliant portfolio, this makes FISV one of the few eligible US fintech names to consider - provided you're comfortable with the turnaround risk discussed below.
