Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM) is the parent of three restaurant brands you already know — KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut. But the real story right now isn't about these three brands operating together — it's about YUM walking away from one of them.
On June 16, 2026, Yum! Brands announced it is selling Pizza Hut in a $2.7 billion deal, split into two parts:
The deal is expected to close in Q3 2026, with net proceeds of roughly $2.3 billion after tax and fees.
Why sell Pizza Hut? The reason is straightforward — Pizza Hut has been the weakest brand in the portfolio. Pizza Hut US same-store sales (SSS) have been negative across multiple recent quarters. By selling it, YUM can concentrate capital, tech investment (the «Byte by Yum» platform), and management attention on its two stronger, faster-growing brands — Taco Bell and KFC.
Taco Bell — YUM's growth engine. It has posted the strongest same-store sales of the three brands for several consecutive quarters (+8% in Q1 2026), driven by an aggressive value-menu and digital-innovation focus.
KFC — YUM's largest brand by global unit count. International unit growth (especially in emerging markets) remains strong, but US same-store sales have been chronically weak or negative. The company is now applying «Taco Bell's playbook» — value pricing, digital, limited-time offers — to try to fix KFC's US performance.
Pizza Hut — being divested. Historically the weakest same-store sales performer in the portfolio.
Many investors confuse Yum! Brands (YUM) with Yum China Holdings (YUMC) — these are TWO separate, independently-listed companies since the 2016 spin-off. YUM (the ticker discussed here) has NO ongoing KFC/Taco Bell/Pizza Hut operations in mainland China, other than residual IP/royalty income and its role as a minority buyer in the Pizza Hut China divestiture. Do not conflate the two when making investment decisions.
YUM has built a proprietary platform called «Byte by Yum» for digital ordering, restaurant operations, personalization, and AI deployment across all its brands. Digital mix has now reached 63% of total system sales — a genuine structural shift away from phone/counter ordering. Taco Bell US is piloting AI-driven drive-thru order-taking, expected to expand nationwide through 2026. KFC UK is running roughly 10 internal AI agents handling tasks like permitting and corporate training design.
The current CEO is Chris Turner, who took over in October 2025, succeeding David Gibbs. The CFO is Ranjith Roy.
YUM is classified as Shariah non-compliant for two independent reasons:
Both factors cause YUM to fail the Shariah screen clearly, not marginally.
