Company Profile: Tapestry, Inc. (TPR)

A One-Brand Company Wearing a Two-Brand Label

Tapestry, Inc. owns Coach and kate spade new york — two accessible-luxury handbag and accessories brands sold mostly in North America, with a fast-growing presence in Greater China and Europe. But look past the “house of brands” framing and a simpler story emerges: Coach now generates roughly 85 to 89 percent of group revenue and is compounding at 25 to 31 percent year-on-year, while kate spade is working through a deliberate, and still painful, turnaround with revenue down about 10 percent. Stuart Weitzman, the third brand in the old Tapestry portfolio, was sold off in August 2025. What used to be a three-brand story is now, functionally, Coach carrying the company with kate spade along for a repositioning ride.

Segment Revenue Breakdown

SegmentShare of Group RevenueRecent Trend
Coach~85–89%+25% to +31% YoY — the clear profit engine
kate spade new york~11–15%-10% YoY — deliberate turnaround in progress
Stuart WeitzmanDivested Aug 2025Sold to Caleres for $105M; no longer a reporting segment

Coach's growth is not an accident of the calendar — it's the product of a strategy CEO Joanne Crevoiserat describes as “magic and logic”: emotional brand pull (heritage, design, storytelling) paired with disciplined, data-driven execution (inventory control, full-price selling, targeted marketing). A central pillar is Gen Z acquisition — Tapestry has been adding roughly 2.4 to 3.7 million new customers per quarter across its brands, with Gen Z shoppers making up about a third of kate spade's new customers and showing notably higher retention than older cohorts. Coach's “accessible luxury” price band, roughly $200 to $500 per bag, is the sweet spot management is defending as its structural moat against both mass-market competitors below and true luxury houses above.

Key Corporate Actions

  • Capri Holdings merger — terminated. The proposed $8.5 billion combination with Capri (owner of Michael Kors, Versace and Jimmy Choo) was blocked by the FTC on antitrust grounds in October 2024 and formally terminated in November 2024. Rather than nurse the loss, management redirected the earmarked capital into a new $2 billion share buyback program — a fast pivot from M&A ambition to capital discipline.
  • Stuart Weitzman divestiture. Sold to footwear group Caleres for $105 million cash in August 2025, closing out a brand Tapestry had bought for roughly $574 million back in 2015. It was a loss on paper, but it simplified the portfolio and freed up management attention — plus a modest margin benefit — to focus on Coach and kate spade.

Shariah Compliance

COMPLIANT — Tapestry is classified as Shariah-compliant for Malaysian investors screening US equities. As always, compliance status can change with a company's business mix or financial ratios, so investors should periodically re-verify status before adding to a position.
