Company Profile — Hims & Hers Health, Inc. (HIMS)

If you've been following HIMS since early 2026, you'll have noticed something jarring: the stock had just rallied past $35, then dropped sharply by roughly 11%-14% in a single trading session on July 24, 2026, closing at $28.09. To understand why, you first need to understand what actually happened to HIMS's business model over the past six months — because this isn't just a "tech stock falls on sentiment" story.

From "compounded" to "branded" — a business-model shift that changed everything

Hims & Hers Health is a direct-to-consumer telehealth platform operating in the United States, offering treatment across several categories: weight loss (GLP-1), men's health (erectile dysfunction, hair loss), women's health, mental health, dermatology, and primary care/labs.

HIMS's primary growth engine since 2024 has been its weight loss segment — but not by selling branded drugs like Ozempic or Wegovy directly from Novo Nordisk. Instead, HIMS marketed compounded semaglutide (a pharmacy-reformulated version, not the original branded product) at significantly higher margin. This strategy drove 69%+ year-over-year revenue growth through FY2024 — an explosive growth rate for a mid-sized health company.

Collision with regulators (February 2026)

That high-margin model eventually collided with regulatory reality. In February 2026, Novo Nordisk (the original manufacturer of semaglutide/Ozempic/Wegovy) filed a patent-infringement lawsuit against HIMS (US Patent 8,129,343) related to compounded semaglutide. Around the same time, the FDA sent warning letters to 30 telehealth companies, including HIMS, over improper marketing of compounded GLP-1 drugs. More concerning still, Novo Nordisk's own testing found impurities as high as 86% in some compounded injectable semaglutide products — this wasn't purely a patent dispute, but a genuine product safety and quality concern.

Settlement and new partnership (March 2026)

On March 9, 2026, Novo Nordisk and HIMS reached a settlement and formed a strategic partnership. HIMS now sells Novo Nordisk's branded Ozempic/Wegovy directly on its platform, and agreed to stop marketing compounded GLP-1 except in specific cases of "medical necessity."

On the surface this sounds like good news — and in many respects it does reduce long-term regulatory risk. But it comes at a real cost: branded drugs carry far lower margins than compounded ones. That impact is already visible in the Q1 2026 financials (see the Financial Analysis section) — gross margin fell sharply from 73% to 65%, adjusted EBITDA was cut in half, and the company swung from net income to a net loss.

A fresh setback — FDA pipeline (July 24, 2026)

On the very day the stock dropped 11-14%, an FDA advisory panel voted 7-6 against approving emideltide, an HIMS-associated peptide drug for opioid-withdrawal treatment and chronic insomnia. This is the first negative FDA panel outcome for any drug in HIMS's pipeline. The panel cited an insufficient safety profile, manufacturing inconsistency concerns, and a lack of compelling efficacy data relative to already-approved alternatives. The stock's drop was also partly tied to a broader healthcare-sector selloff over concerns about uninsured-patient exposure — HCA Healthcare, for instance, reported roughly a $400 million pretax income hit from the same dynamic in the same period.

Shariah Compliance Status

✅ Per the Zoya reference database (zoya_us_stock_reference), HIMS is classified as SHARIAH COMPLIANT. To be transparent: this is a prescription-pharmaceutical telehealth company — its core business involves selling prescription medications (including GLP-1 drugs, mental health treatments, and others) through a digital platform. Zoya's classification is based on financial screening and business-activity methodology per their own framework; it is not an independent assessment by mahersaham.com. Muslim investors with specific concerns — particularly around the mental health and hormone-related segments — are encouraged to review the nature of the treatments/products sold themselves.
