If you still think of Corning (GLW) as 'the Gorilla Glass company for iPhones,' that story is out of date. From late 2025 into mid-2026, Corning has been aggressively transforming from a legacy glass/display company into the critical 'physical layer' supplier for the AI data center buildout — fiber optic cable, connectors, and co-packaged optics that link thousands of GPUs inside hyperscaler data centers like Meta's and Amazon's. At the same time, its solar/polysilicon business (Hemlock) is re-accelerating on the side.
This is not a small story. From July 2025 to its peak on June 30, 2026, GLW stock surged as much as 257% in a single year, driven by the 'AI optics' narrative and passive index-fund flows after Corning was added to major FTSE Russell growth indexes. But after hitting an all-time high (ATH) of $271.78 on June 30, 2026, the stock cratered ~36% in about two weeks to roughly $154.61 (July 18, 2026) — a combination of an overheated valuation, notable insider selling, and early signs of a slowdown in the carrier/telecom segment. We dig deeper into the valuation question in the Valuation section below.
| Segment | What it does | Current trend |
|---|---|---|
| Optical Communications | Fiber, cable, connectors for data centers & telecom | Primary growth engine — Q1 2026 sales +36% YoY to ~$1.85B, driven by hyperscaler AI demand. But the legacy carrier/telecom side is decelerating. |
| Display Technologies | Glass substrates for LCD/OLED TVs & monitors | Legacy segment, historically the highest-margin business, now facing a panel-inventory buildup headwind through 2026. |
| Specialty Materials | Gorilla Glass for mobile devices (Apple a major customer) | Stable, tied to the global smartphone replacement cycle. |
| Environmental Technologies | Ceramic substrates for auto emission control | Stable, closely tied to the automotive industry. |
| Life Sciences | Lab/research products | Small, stable segment. |
| Hemlock & Emerging Growth (Solar) | Polysilicon & solar wafers | Re-accelerating — Q1 2026 sales up ~80% YoY, with margins already above the 20% corporate target. But the wafer plant hit production bottlenecks requiring an extended maintenance shutdown. |
✅ SHARIAH COMPLIANT — Corning Incorporated is classified as Shariah-compliant per Zoya/global Shariah screening data. As a maker of glass, optical fiber, and specialty materials, Corning's core business does not involve prohibited activities (riba/interest-based finance, gambling, alcohol, etc). Muslim investors should still monitor financial ratios (debt, cash, non-halal income) periodically, as US Shariah status can shift with each quarterly data-provider review.
