An American Pantry Icon Caught in an Industry Storm

General Mills (GIS) is one of the most recognized names in the US consumer food industry - the owner of brands including Cheerios, Haagen-Dazs, Pillsbury, Old El Paso, Betty Crocker and Blue Buffalo pet food. With a market cap of roughly $20.2 billion and a share price trading around $36 - close to its 52-week low of $31.75 (52-week high $51.33) - GIS has become one of the clearest examples of how a 'defensive' consumer staples name can still suffer a major de-rating when several industry structural trends hit at once.

A Perfect Storm in Packaged Food

The entire US packaged food industry is facing an unusually rare combination of pressures at the same time: first, GLP-1 weight-loss drugs (such as Ozempic and Wegovy) are becoming more widely used and are believed to be structurally suppressing snacking appetite and calorie intake - food makers themselves acknowledge this effect will be lasting. Second, cost-squeezed consumers are increasingly trading down to cheaper private-label alternatives instead of paying up for big brands like Cheerios or Pillsbury. Third, MAHA (Make America Healthy Again) health policy pressure under RFK Jr. has grown from simple artificial-dye bans into one of the biggest reformulation waves the industry has ever faced - companies are being forced to remove certain ingredients and re-engineer existing recipes, an expensive and time-consuming process.

GIS's Response: A Pivot to Protein and Health

In response, General Mills has rolled out products such as Honey Nut Cheerios Protein, Ghost performance nutrition bars, new granola lines and smaller pack sizes - an attempt to recapture consumers who are prioritizing protein and calorie control. The company is also reformulating products to remove certified colors, in line with MAHA pressure. Its marketing approach is dubbed the 'Remarkability playbook' - a combination of brand investment, product news and value-price positioning.

Reshaping the Portfolio: Yogurt Out, Pet In

Under Chairman and CEO Jeff Harmening (in the role since 2017), General Mills has reshaped roughly one-third of its portfolio under its 'Accelerate' strategy. The biggest move: selling the entire North American yogurt business (Yoplait, Go-Gurt, Oui, Liberte) for a total of $2.1 billion - the Canadian arm to Sodiaal (closed January 2025) and the US arm to Lactalis (closed 30 June 2025, at the start of FY26). In its place, GIS acquired premium cat food and pet treats maker Whitebridge Pet Brands (Tiki Pets, Cloud Star) for $1.45 billion - its fifth pet acquisition since 2018, following Blue Buffalo (2018), Nudges/True Chews (2021), Fera Pets (2023) and Edgard & Cooper (2024). This portfolio reshuffling is the main reason reported FY26 sales fell 5% even though organic sales were down only 2%.

Shariah Status

Based on the mahersaham database, General Mills (GIS) is confirmed NON-COMPLIANT with Shariah screening. This is most likely driven by the company's elevated leverage relative to equity, and/or exposure to non-compliant products or revenue streams within its food portfolio. Muslim investors in Malaysia should avoid this stock as part of a Shariah-compliant portfolio, regardless of how attractive its dividend yield or valuation multiples may look.

Financial Analysis

GIS reported fiscal Q1 FY2027 on September 23, 2026 and reaffirmed its full-year outlook. The short version: organic sales finally stopped shrinking, but input costs are squeezing margins, so profit is still down.

Metric (Q1 FY27)ValueYoY change
Net sales$4.4 billion-3% (U.S. yogurt divestiture)
Organic net salesRoughly flat0%
Adjusted gross margin33.3%-90 bps
Adjusted operating profit$634 million-11% (constant currency)
Adjusted operating margin14.4%-130 bps
Adjusted EPS$0.75-13% (constant currency)
Reported EPS$0.74-67% (prior year had yogurt sale gain)

By segment, organic sales in North America Retail fell 3%, Pet was flat, Foodservice rose 4% and International rose 4%. Within Pet, cat food and treats were strong while dog food remained weak.

The FY27 guide was maintained: organic sales between -1.5% and +0.5%, adjusted operating profit down 8%-13% (constant currency), adjusted EPS $3.00-$3.20. The guide includes an approximately 11-point headwind from divestitures and last year's extra week.

Dividends

The dividend is the main reason most people own GIS, and the company has an unbroken payment record of more than 120 years (127 years per the earlier report). In Q1 FY27, GIS paid $330 million in dividends and no cut or change was announced. The quarterly rate is roughly $0.60 per share, or about $2.40 a year (an estimate derived from the yield and price in the earlier snapshot, please verify against the official declaration).

At about $35.2, the dividend yield is roughly 6.8% (estimate). That is nearly double GIS's historical range of 3%-4.5%, and a yield this high usually means the market is pricing in some risk to the dividend itself.

The more important question: does profit cover it? With adjusted EPS guided to $3.00-$3.20, a $2.40 dividend implies a payout ratio of about 75%-80% (our calculation, an estimate). That is higher than last year and leaves a thinner cushion.
