Duke Energy: A Century-Old Power Utility Reborn as an AI Infrastructure Play

Picture a utility that has been keeping the lights on in the Carolinas since the early 1900s suddenly becoming one of the most-discussed names in America's AI data center buildout. That is Duke Energy (DUK) today. It is not a tech company, it is one of the largest regulated electric utilities in the United States, but the explosive growth in AI data center power demand since 2025 has fundamentally reshaped its growth trajectory.

Duke Energy provides regulated electricity and natural gas to roughly 8.4 million customers across six states: North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. This is the classic regulated-utility business model: DUK builds infrastructure (grid, power plants, gas pipelines), state regulators approve rate cases that let DUK earn a reasonable return on invested capital. It is stable, unglamorous, and predictable, until AI data centers entered the picture.

Business Segments

Segment% of Revenue (FY2025)Description
Electric Utilities & Infrastructure (EU&I)~92%Regulated power generation, transmission & distribution
Gas Utilities & Infrastructure (GU&I)~8%Regulated natural gas distribution

Total FY2025 revenue came in around $32.23 billion. The electric segment clearly dominates the mix, and it is also the segment most directly (and positively) affected by the data center demand wave.

Leadership

Harry Sideris took over as President & CEO of Duke Energy in April 2025, after previously serving as President overseeing both the electric and natural gas utility units. He brings deep operational experience from within DUK's core business rather than being an outside hire, which matters given the delicate balancing act the company faces over the next several years: managing surging data center demand while keeping rates affordable for residential customers.

Shariah Compliance Status: NON-COMPLIANT

Important for Muslim investors: Duke Energy is classified as NON_COMPLIANT. This is not unusual, nearly all large regulated utilities (in the US and globally) fail standard Shariah screens because of high levels of interest-bearing debt relative to market value or assets. The utility business model inherently relies on long-term debt to finance capital-intensive infrastructure like the grid and power plants, and this structurally breaches the debt thresholds allowed under most Shariah screening methodologies (e.g. interest-bearing debt/market cap above 33%).

This report is prepared for educational and financial-analysis purposes only, it is NOT a Shariah-compliant investment recommendation. If you are a Muslim investor prioritizing a Shariah-compliant portfolio, DUK is not suitable for that allocation. This report remains useful for understanding how the US utility sector is positioned within the AI infrastructure narrative, but your actual investment decisions should align with your own Shariah requirements.

Recent Corporate Actions: A Record $103 Billion Capital Plan

In April 2026, DUK announced an 18% increase to its five-year capital plan, raising it to a record $103 billion, the largest such plan in US utility industry history. Roughly 65% of that spend is earmarked for grid infrastructure and new generation. The driver? Explosive data center demand, data center power requests were up 73% year-over-year in early 2026, with individual project sizes now reaching the gigawatt range. DUK currently holds 7.6 GW of executed data center agreements (nearly two-thirds already under construction) with another 15 GW in its late-stage pipeline.
