If you still think of Shopify as a platform for small merchants to build online stores, you are missing the bigger story unfolding right now. Shopify is racing to become the infrastructure layer for AI shopping agents (agentic commerce) - and right now, they are ahead of the pack.
In March 2026, Shopify launched Agentic Storefronts - a system that lets AI agents (think ChatGPT, Claude, or other shopping assistants) see merchant inventory in real time, read product data in machine-readable formats, and complete tokenized checkouts without a human clicking 'buy' manually. This makes Shopify the FIRST major platform to ship this - BigCommerce is only planning UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol) support for Q3 2026, while Wix and Square are targeting 2027 and beyond. That first-mover edge matters because e-commerce is shifting toward an era where consumers simply 'tell' an AI agent what to buy instead of scrolling manually.
Shopify is a SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) platform that lets merchants - from solo entrepreneurs to global brands - build, manage, and grow their own e-commerce storefronts. This 'sell everywhere, own the brand' model differs from a marketplace model like Amazon, where merchants do not own the direct relationship with their customers.
Shopify's revenue comes from two main segments:
In Q1 2026, Shopify posted GMV (Gross Merchandise Volume) of $100.7 billion - the first quarter ever to cross the $100 billion mark. That is not a small number - it shows the real scale of the merchant ecosystem running on top of Shopify.
One important trend to watch - Shopify is increasingly moving toward larger, enterprise-sized merchants through its Shopify Plus tier, which now accounts for about 34% of the company's MRR (Monthly Recurring Revenue). Overall MRR rose from $182 million to $212 million YoY. Plus merchants typically carry higher GMV per merchant and are 'stickier' since they often run multiple stores/markets within a single Shopify ecosystem.
According to the Zoya US stock reference, Shopify Inc (SHOP) is listed as SHARIAH COMPLIANT. This means the stock may be considered by investors who prioritize Shariah screening in their portfolios - though you should always verify the current status before making an investment decision, since this status can shift as the company's financial ratios change over time.
Shopify was founded and is still led by Tobi Lütke as CEO - a founder who remains very hands-on in the company's technical direction, including its aggressive push into AI and agentic commerce. Lütke's governance and voting control structure is somewhat unusual (more on this in the gold section below, and in Red Flags).
