Paychex, Inc. (PAYX) has long been known as the reliable payroll-processing workhorse for small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs) in the United States. That story shifted decisively on April 14, 2025, when Paychex completed its roughly $4.1 billion all-cash acquisition of Paycor HCM — the largest deal in the company's history. Paycor brought along approximately 49,000 clients and 2.7 million covered employees, concentrated in the larger mid-market segment that Paychex historically struggled to reach.
At the same time, Paychex launched an agentic AI platform called WISE (Workforce Intelligence Strengthened by Expertise) on May 19, 2026 — not just a chatbot, but a platform designed to autonomously execute HR tasks across payroll, HCM, and advisory workflows. CEO John Gibson has framed these two strategic pillars — Paycor for upmarket expansion, and WISE for AI-driven product differentiation — as the core narrative behind the company's current growth story.
Paychex operates through two primary segments:
John Gibson leads Paychex as CEO. Company founder Thomas Golisano still holds roughly 10.5% of shares outstanding but has long stepped back from day-to-day operations — he is now primarily focused on charitable giving through periodic share donations.
Paychex is classified as COMPLIANT (Shariah-compliant) per the Zoya US stock reference. This means the core business model (payroll, HR, insurance, PEO) does not involve material non-compliant activity, and its financial ratios (debt levels, impermissible income/investment exposure) fall within permitted thresholds.

How to Get Gold AccessFiscal Q1 2027 (three months to August 31, 2026) was solid on the surface. Revenue was $1,630.5 million, up 6%, in line with the roughly $1.63 billion consensus. Adjusted diluted EPS was $1.34, up 10%, a couple of cents above the $1.32 expected.
| Item | Q1 FY27 | YoY |
|---|---|---|
| Total revenue | $1,630.5M | +6% |
| Management Solutions | $1,213.1M | +4% |
| PEO and Insurance Solutions | $367.6M | +12% |
| Interest on funds held for clients | $49.8M | +5% |
| Operating income (GAAP) | $619.2M | +14% |
| Adjusted operating income | $684.7M | +9% |
| Operating margin (GAAP) | 38.0% | vs 35.2% |
| Adjusted operating margin | 42.0% | vs 40.7% |
| Net income | $429.7M | +12% |
| Diluted EPS (GAAP) | $1.21 | +14% |
| Adjusted diluted EPS | $1.34 | +10% |
The story inside the numbers: the PEO engine is doing the work. Worksite employee growth was just under double digits, retention hit a record, and ASO-to-PEO conversions ran at about twice management's plan, with converted clients generating roughly 3.5 times the revenue (call figures, single source). The flip side is that Management Solutions grew only 4%, below its 5-6% full-year guide, and the mix shift toward PEO explains part of that.
Margin expanded, and management kept the full-year adjusted operating margin at about 44%, with fiscal Q2 guided to roughly 40% (single source).

How to Get Gold AccessPaychex paid $424.1 million in dividends in fiscal Q1 2027, which the company says works out to $1.19 per share for the quarter. Held at that rate, that is about $4.76 a year (our annualisation, an estimate), a yield near 4.6% at the $104.49 close. Third-party screens show slightly different yields, around 4.3%, depending on the dividend base they use.
Coverage is the part to watch. On FY27 adjusted EPS of roughly $5.90-6.00 (our estimate: FY26 adjusted EPS of $5.51 grown at the 7-9% guide), the annualised dividend is about 80% of adjusted earnings, a workable but tight payout. On a GAAP basis the payout is higher. In Q1 the dividend cash outflow was greater than free cash flow, and there were no share repurchases, so all of the capital return went to the dividend.
We did not find a newly declared dividend in the search results for this update, so the next declaration is unverified. The long record of annual increases is intact as far as we can see, and a third-party source cites a three-year dividend growth rate near 10.8%.
