If you know MSTR as “that enterprise business-intelligence (BI) software company,” that's old news. In February 2025, MicroStrategy Incorporated formally rebranded to Strategy Incorporated, cementing an identity that had really been true since 2020 — this is a “Bitcoin Treasury Company,” a capital-markets engine that raises debt and equity to buy and hold Bitcoin, with a small legacy BI software segment attached almost as an afterthought.
To put the scale in perspective: the legacy software business generates roughly $124.3M in quarterly revenue (Q1 2026), versus a Bitcoin treasury with a cumulative cost basis of ~$63.69B (843,775 BTC). In other words, the software business is now a footnote to a single-asset bet — Bitcoin — wrapped in a NASDAQ-listed public company.
This matters because you shouldn't value MSTR like an ordinary tech company (e.g. using P/E or software revenue growth as your primary lens). It behaves more like a “leveraged Bitcoin proxy” — its share price is tightly correlated to BTC's price, amplified by leverage baked into the capital structure (convertible debt, preferred stock).
Since 2020, Michael Saylor's core thesis has been “never sell a single Bitcoin.” In 2026, for the first time ever, Strategy's board approved a BTC Monetization Program authorizing the sale of up to $1.25B of Bitcoin to fund preferred-stock dividends, interest, and buybacks. This is not a minor footnote — it's a real crack in the “diamond hands” narrative that underpinned the stock's premium valuation through 2024-2025. If you bought MSTR as a long-term HODL proxy, this shift deserves serious attention.
The zoya_us_stock_reference database flags MSTR's shariah status as COMPLIANT based on a business-activity screen (software/technology). That said, there's an important nuance around the company's capital structure — fixed-dividend preferred stock and convertible notes — that shariah-conscious readers should be aware of; see the gold section for a deeper discussion.
