Hooker Furnishings Corporation (NASDAQ: HOFT) is no longer simply a domestic furniture manufacturer. Today, the most accurate way to understand HOFT is as a furniture importer and marketer — the majority of its products now sourced from Vietnam — combined with a domestic upholstery manufacturing operation in the United States. This is a major shift from HOFT's business model a decade ago, and the company itself has called fiscal 2026 (FY2026, ended February 1, 2026) a 'transformative' year.
Throughout FY2026, HOFT went through an aggressive turnaround: divesting two unprofitable divisions — Pulaski Furniture and Samuel Lawrence Furniture (both formerly part of the Home Meridian International import segment) — while cutting fixed costs by roughly 25% (~$26.3M annualized, ahead of the original target) and shifting import sourcing away from China (still ~13%) toward Vietnam (now ~76% of import purchases). This shift was executed specifically to reduce US tariff exposure.
Post-restructuring, HOFT now reports three segments: Hooker Branded, Domestic Upholstery, and All Other. (Note: exact segment naming should be re-confirmed against the FY2026 10-K — the original research brief could not access the full 10-K text due to SEC EDGAR access restrictions during research.)
| Segment | Net Sales (Q1 FY2027) | Operating Income/(Loss) | Margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hooker Branded | $35.3M | $1.2M | 3.4% |
| Domestic Upholstery | $28.4M | $(0.7)M | -2.4% |
| All Other | $5.8M | $1.1M | 18.4% |
For full-year FY2026, Hooker Branded returned to profitability ($1.9M, versus a $433K loss the prior year) — a genuinely encouraging sign. Domestic Upholstery still posted a full-year operating loss of $16.9M, but that loss has been narrowing every quarter (down more than 50% YoY in Q4, and nearly breakeven at -$0.7M in Q1 FY2027) — this segment is the real determinant of whether HOFT's turnaround thesis pans out.
HOFT is led by President & CEO Jeremy R. Hoff and CFO C. Earl Armstrong III. On the governance side, Board Chair W. Christopher Beeler Jr. is retiring from the board at the 2026 annual shareholder meeting (the company states this is not due to any disagreement). The board is also expanding from 8 to 9 seats following the appointment of a new independent director with furniture-industry expertise (announced January 2, 2026).
Based on our database screening (zoya_us_stock_reference), HOFT is classified as Shariah Non-Compliant. This matters for Muslim investors or anyone prioritizing a Shariah-compliant portfolio — HOFT is not a suitable candidate for that kind of portfolio, regardless of how compelling its turnaround narrative may be. One likely contributing factor is the company's reliance on a $70M interest-bearing revolving credit facility as part of its capital structure — a common feature of conventional US corporations that typically fails Shariah screening financial ratios (e.g. interest-bearing debt relative to assets or market capitalization). Mahersaham does not include HOFT in any of our Shariah-compliant stock lists — this section is provided purely for educational and research purposes.
