Dorchester Minerals, L.P. (DMLP) is not a typical oil & gas (O&G) company of the kind you usually find on NASDAQ. DMLP does not drill wells, does not operate production facilities, and does not bear lease operating expenses directly. Instead, DMLP is a passive owner of mineral and royalty interests. The company holds a right to a share of oil and gas sales revenue produced by other operators on land where DMLP holds royalty, overriding royalty, net profits interest, and a small amount of working/leasehold interest.
The business model is straightforward: when an operator (typically a large E&P company) drills and produces oil/gas on acreage where DMLP holds a royalty, DMLP receives its share of revenue without spending a cent on drilling or field operating costs. That means DMLP's margin structure is structurally cleaner than a typical operator's, but it also means DMLP has no direct control over the pace of production — all drilling and timing decisions rest entirely with third-party operators.
DMLP is listed as a Publicly Traded Partnership (PTP), not a conventional C-corporation. That means unitholders receive a Schedule K-1 (not a 1099-DIV) for tax purposes — meaningfully more complex than holding ordinary shares, and particularly important for US investors holding it inside a retirement account (IRA) due to UBTI (Unrelated Business Taxable Income) risk. For non-US investors, PTP units like DMLP are also subject to withholding tax under IRC §1446(f) upon sale.
DMLP's single most important differentiator versus peers is a deliberate zero-debt policy. This is not incidental — management actively avoids leverage and hedging specifically to minimize UBTI exposure for unitholders. A useful side effect: DMLP rarely suffers severe distress during commodity downturns because there is no debt balance requiring interest payments — unlike peers such as Black Stone Minerals (BSM), Viper Energy (VNOM), and Kimbell Royalty Partners (KRP), all of which carry some leverage.
| Region | Approx. Net Acres / Coverage | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Total footprint | 594 counties/parishes, 28 US states | Broad geographic diversification |
| Permian Basin (Midland + Delaware) | ~96,500 net acres | Largest core region |
| Bakken/Three Forks, Williston Basin (ND) | ~10,200+ net acres | Growing following the July 2026 acquisition |
| Eagle Ford + other legacy positions | Diversified legacy interests | Smaller slice of the portfolio |
On July 3, 2026 (announced July 6, 2026), DMLP agreed to acquire approximately 3,100 net royalty acres across five counties in the Williston Basin, North Dakota — another small bolt-on acquisition consistent with DMLP's growth playbook: buy with cash (not debt), don't drill.
Per Zoya screening (zoya_us_stock_reference), DMLP is confirmed SHARIAH COMPLIANT. As a passive royalty owner that does not operate, does not borrow, and does not invest in interest-bearing instruments, DMLP's business model naturally tends to clear Shariah screens — the zero-debt policy described above is one key reason it passes consistently. That said, you should always defer to Zoya's official verdict (or another Shariah screening provider) as the authoritative source, rather than any independent Shariah opinion, including this report.
