Company Profile

From Food-Delivery App to Global Local-Commerce Platform

DoorDash started life as a US food-delivery app, but the 2025-2026 story is about a much bigger transformation. The company is shifting its identity from a 'US food-delivery app' into a broader global 'local commerce' platform — spanning delivery, merchant advertising, restaurant reservation systems, and a growing suite of technology tools for small and mid-sized businesses.

Today, DASH's business splits into two main engines. First, Marketplace — the core restaurant, grocery and retail delivery business, measured through GOV (Gross Order Value). Second, Platform Services — the higher-margin segment that includes merchant advertising, DashPass subscriptions, and merchant technology tools (including AI-powered onboarding, product-photo editing and merchant website-building tools launched in April 2026). This second segment is the core of DASH's long-term strategy, echoing how Amazon built a highly profitable advertising business layered on top of its e-commerce platform.

The Biggest 2025-2026 Corporate Action: Deliveroo + SevenRooms

DASH's most consequential move in this period is the acquisition of Deliveroo (UK) for roughly USD3.86 billion in cash, and SevenRooms (restaurant reservation and CRM software) for roughly USD1.2 billion in cash. Both deals were announced in May 2025 and formally closed on October 2, 2025. The impact is significant — combining Deliveroo with DASH's existing Wolt footprint (acquired earlier) gives the company a presence across roughly 40 countries with more than 50 million monthly active users. SevenRooms opens the door to a higher-margin restaurant-tech business, going beyond pure delivery logistics.

Interestingly, at the same time DASH is pulling back from four smaller markets — Qatar, Singapore, Japan and Uzbekistan. This isn't a sign of weakness; rather it reflects a more disciplined approach: concentrate capital in markets with real scale potential (Europe via Deliveroo/Wolt) while cutting losses in smaller, unprofitable markets. 2026 itself is a heavy 'integration year' — merging the Wolt and Deliveroo tech stacks into one global platform, which explains why R&D costs rose 41% YoY and S&M costs rose 31% YoY.

Leadership

Tony Xu is DoorDash's founder and CEO since inception, and he still holds a large, long-term performance-based equity package (multi-year, milestone-vesting) dating back to the IPO — a structure often described as 'Elon-esque' in size and duration. He remains the driving force behind company strategy, including the Deliveroo/SevenRooms acquisitions and investment in the 'Dot' autonomous delivery robot. The consistent pattern of insider selling (mostly tied to tax withholding on vesting PSUs) is a watch item you should note — discussed in more detail in the Gold section below.

Shariah Compliance Status

Based on the zoya_us_stock_reference database, DoorDash (DASH) is confirmed SHARIAH COMPLIANT. This matters if Shariah-compliant investing is a priority for you — DASH's core business (delivery services, advertising, subscriptions) does not directly involve riba, gambling, or other prohibited activities.

So what does this mean for you as an investor? DASH is no longer just a 'food-delivery app' — it is attempting to become a broader local-commerce infrastructure layer, with a major bet on merchant advertising and long-term delivery automation. This is an ambitious growth story, but that ambition comes with real near-term integration costs, something you need to understand before looking at the financial numbers in the next section.
