From CDN to a Security + Cloud Computing platform

Akamai Technologies started as a Content Delivery Network (CDN) company - a global network of servers that helps websites and apps load faster by caching content closer to end users around the world. But the 'traditional' CDN business has faced years of structural pressure: large customers are increasingly optimizing their own traffic (DIY), while hyperscalers such as AWS CloudFront, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud (which together control more than 60% of the global cloud infrastructure market) keep pushing prices down. Akamai's Delivery segment is now in structural decline - not just a cyclical dip.

But the real AKAM story today isn't about a shrinking CDN business - it's a transformation into a Security + Compute (Cloud Computing) platform company. The FY2025 revenue mix tells the story clearly:

• Security: approximately $2.24 billion (+10% YoY) - now Akamai's LARGEST segment, more than half of total company revenue.
• Compute (Cloud Infrastructure): approximately $708 million (+12% YoY) - the fastest-growing segment. In Q1 2026 alone, Cloud Infrastructure Services jumped +40% YoY - this is Akamai's bet on becoming a lower-cost alternative to hyperscalers for edge and AI workloads.
• Delivery (legacy CDN): approximately $1.26 billion, and still shrinking. Still around 30% of revenue, but Akamai's own CDN market mindshare fell from 16.4% to 11.8% year-over-year (as of July 2026).

To accelerate this transformation, management has been actively using M&A and convertible debt. Key moves in 2026 include:

• LayerX (approximately $205 million, completed 2 July 2026) - a secure enterprise browser for controlling AI usage inside organizations, extending Akamai's Zero Trust approach to the browser layer.
• Symantec web security (from Broadcom, announced March 2026, still pending) - an expansion of the security portfolio.
• Fermyon - a Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) company built on WebAssembly, strengthening the Compute/edge platform.

Another important catalyst: an AI infrastructure/compute deal with Anthropic announced in May 2026 - it contributed to a +32.1% stock rally that month, alongside buyback progress. This is not hype alone - it's a concrete data point supporting Akamai's Compute thesis as an AI-adjacent platform.
